5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

The Independent Florida Alligator
  1. Campus blue lights not used for emergency situations often, data shows

  • This article talks about the blue emergency phones that are available on campus and how they are underutilized. Log respires or the times they have been used showed that only 2.7% of the activations from 2017-2019 resulted in a police report. The article brings up the protests that occurred on campus last year that lead to the future installment of lights along frat row on campus. The officer that was Interviewed stated that he hopes they are used more in the future, but that they are still important to have in case.
  • The problem in this article is that the numbers have shown that the emergency blue lights on campus are not being used. Some students feel that because or this lack of use it is not worth installing more on campus because of the high price.
  • I think that the University of Florida has the problem because the underutilization of these phones brings up the question of if installing more on emergency phones on campus is worth the thousands of dollars and if not what is another method that is worth the investment that will be used more.
  1. VP, Treasurer and many Senate candidates in Progressive Party resign within hours

  • Candidates running for Student Body Vice President and Treasurer resign within hours of each other after an audio clip was leaked on Facebook of them making transphobic comments. These students are a part of the democratic Progressive Party who recently released their platform was supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Alfredo Ortiz, one of those in the audio, claims that their comments were taken out of context and that they were filmed without knowledge.
  • The problem is that these Student Body candidates were caught making transphobic comments while being a party of a political party that’s platform is LGBTQ+ supporting.
  • The people who have the problem are the candidates that were caught making the comments has made many Progressive Party members withdrawal from the running.

  1. UN agency declares global emergency over virus from China

  • The UN has declared the global emergency after the new virus has reached more than dozens of countries and recently spiked in the past week. Their main concerns is if this virus spreads to countries that have weaker health systems making it harder for them to treat those who might be sick. When a global emergency is declared it means more money and resources are provided, but also makes governments limit their travel with affected areas.
  • The problem is that the new virus in China has began to spread quickly to other countries.
  • The people who are affected by this problem are the Chinese because of the affects of lack of travel to the country because of health concerns. This problem also affects everyone in the world because if it continues to spread it can cause many more deaths to occur.

  1. Local vape shops lose profits due to recent tobacco law

  • When the new tobacco law passed in the state of Florida it has caused the sales in vape shops to decrease. Many vape shops in Gainesville have lost about 30% of their customers due to them being between the ages of 18-20 years old. They feel like the stores won’t close, but they have to get use to the low numbers.
  • The problem is the new tobacco law has caused there to be a decrease in sales in local vape shops.
  • The people who are affected by this problem are store owners of these vape shops.

  1. UF Sailing Team’s equipment damaged by high winds

  • On December 14th Lake Wauburg was hit by strong winds that crashed 8 of the sailing teams boats and caused minor damage to two boats. Despite the loss their hope is to go to nationals this year. The teams Treasurer stated that the team was going to purchase new vessels.  The boats poles and boat docks were completely destroyed, but the sails and boathouse were spared. The team has created a GoFundMe in hopes to raise money espically from alumni during gator giving day this year.
  • The problem is that rough winds has damaged the UF’s Sailing Team boats, which has caused them to stop practicing for nationals this semester.
  • The people who are affected by this is the UF Sailing Team.

Comments

  1. Hi Natasha,

Thanks for sharing opportunities that are relate-able to Gainesville. I found your first one regarding the blue lights intriguing because there was recently a petition to have more blue lights put on campus, while statistics show they are underused. Perhaps a solution to this could be a new way to call for help like a safety app. I like your variety of stories from drastic such as the Virus in China that is a global issue, to minimal such as the strong winds affecting the sail that that only effects a small group of people.

    Great job.
