20A – Growing Your Social Capital

Domain Expert:
I submitted a contact form to the Feeding America website requesting them to contact me back. I will take this opportunity to ask how to go about as an organization to start collecting donations and how in the future USA Relief is able to donate to them because it is one of the national organizations that assist when natural disasters occur within the United States. This way I am able to receive advice on how to go about starting the organization and running it smoothly and establishing at least one organization for future donations. I have not yet received an email response to my request.

Important Supplier to Industry:
On the UF campus, there are a lot of organizations that volunteer in the community and that ask for donations from local businesses. One of them is called Delta Nu Zeta, which is a community service sorority that volunteers with many organizations throughout the Alachua County community. I got in contact with the exec member who is in charge of community service outreach, Vanessa, to discuss how to go about reaching out to local organizations to ask for donations and potential partnerships. She has been a part of DNZ for a few years and has held this position for about a year now. I know this person because I am a part of this sorority on campus. I asked her to send me a list of all the organizations we partner with, so I can have a list to start reaching out to. She will enhance my network because she has the main point of contact with local organizations that I can reach out to ask for advice on how to get started with USA Relief since they are aware of how to go about collecting donations and how to get them where they are supposed to.

  1. Good work leveraging your connections through the sorority. As far as contacting Feeding America goes, I'm sorry to say, but my hunch is that you won't hear back from them because of their large size. I would recommend getting in touch with a member organization, like Bread of the Mighty in Gainesville. I wish I could help you out more with a market expert, but the best I can do is suggest you get in touch with a relief response unit like the FEMA Corps:

  2. Hi Natasha,

Incredible how an organization like a sorority can be such a great help in making connections. I am sure you could find some sort of local organization that could help with getting your feet on the ground in the marketing department. Perhaps even contacting a Florida Dance Marathon leader would be a good start and they could put you in contact with someone who could really help get the word out on your organization.
